Green Power Update

This article was written by a Year 10 student.

Over the last three years, Raincliffe School, now Graham School, have been building an electric racing car in an after school club to race in a competition called Greenpower. The car is now finished and so far they have been to two races at Croft Circuit and Aintree, Liverpool.

The team is made up of students ranging from Year 11 to 7 at the moment and some ex-students who still wish to participate. The team recently went to Aintree on the 15th September, "The Car was fast and we were lapping many of the other schools, it was great, although we did have two break downs, so we did not get a good place" said Tom cooper, a member of the team.

The competition is for school students all around the country, and there are hundreds of schools participating, Graham is the only school is Scarborough who have built a car.

Mr. Cotton, team leader, said "we did not expect to get a good place, as we went mainly to test it, we were very surprised by its speed reaching 40 mpg despite its weight of nearly 120 kilos, next time we hope to get through to the next stage of the competition.

Grahams car was also quite different from the others, they made theirs entirely from scratch whereas most of the over schools had bought their chassis and body work. The car was named 'Blind Racer' because other drivers told the team that the shiny aluminium which the car is made of reflected the sunlight and got in their eyes when it went past, many other teams nicknamed it 'The Coffin'.
