English is vital for communicating with others in school and in the wider world and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects. In studying English, pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

These are the skills they will require to participate in society and employment. Pupils learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others confidently and effectively.
What can I do with this qualification when I leave school?
English GCSE is a requirement in most fields of employment.
English enables access to the world of written material in all subjects.
Grade C, or better, in English Language is a requirement for the award of the English Baccalaureate.
Most students will follow the English course, leading to a GCSE at the end of year 10. Those students who pass the English course in Year 10, with a C grade or above, will then be eligible to complete the GCSE Media Studies course in their final year of school. Any students who fail to meet this target will be given the opportunity to continue with the English course and re-sit the examination at the end of Year 11.
Some students in Year 10 will be given the opportunity to follow the two year English Language and English Literature course. This will lead to two GSCE grades at the end of Year 11. However, only those students who have made exceptional progress in Year 9 will be offered this, as there will be no other opportunity to re-sit this combined course.
